<br />
Another year another National Donut Day! And this year to celebrate <a href="http://www.thedonutdirectory.com/" target="_blank">The Donut Directory</a> found itself in New York City at one of the oldest shops in Chelsea, <a href="http://www.donutpub.com/" target="_blank">The Donut Pub</a>. Located on 14th Street and 7th Avenue, has been serving up donuts to lower Manhattan since 1946. <br />
<br />
On today's donut adventure, I made a new friend, found an amazing new donut shop and now have a permanent cab driver anytime I am in NYC. <br />
<br />
I woke to beautiful weather in New York and began walking towards my first destination, <a href="http://holeycreamnyc.com/food-delivery-TW/holey-cream-manhattan-consumer.6618.r?QueryStringValue=VMmqwG+45lq8Hr7RLKf8cQ==" target="_blank">Holey Cream</a>, rationalising that I would walk off a few extra calories from the night before in order to feel better about the donut (s) I was about to consume; but let's face it do I really need to justify eating a donut? Which is why when my new friend Oscar waved me down from his cab I jumped in and we were off like a shot. "Where are we going?" Oscar questioned as any proficient cab driver does. "53rd and 9th, I'm on the hunt for a dozen donuts, and fast!" We both laughed and I began to share the story of <a href="http://www.thedonutdirectory.com/" target="_blank">The Donut Directory</a>. Oscar was fascinated and more then ready to dive into a few. However, when we arrived at <a href="http://holeycreamnyc.com/food-delivery-TW/holey-cream-manhattan-consumer.6618.r?QueryStringValue=VMmqwG+45lq8Hr7RLKf8cQ==" target="_blank">Holey Cream</a>, hoping for ice cream filled donuts, they were closed. "Did you call them?" Oscar questioned "Can you see any hours on the door?" His persistent passion suggested he had also been bitten by the donut bug and was beginning to salivate at the thought of consuming a delicious dough ball. The dark shop and tightly closed door left us begging like 2 puppies with wide eyes of desperation. <br />
<br />
"Wait", I said "How fast can you get us to 14th street?" Considering it was 8:45 and I had a 9:00am meeting, I knew we had to act fast. I always have a back up donut in the unfortunate event that a shop is closed, or god for bid out of donuts; perish the thought. Before I could complete the "eet" on the end of my phrase Osacr was off. Like men possessed, we bounded through traffic as if the Donut 500 was in full fury and the checkered flag was about to fall. Tires squealing around 8th ave and 14th St, and bang an open spot just across the street waiting for us. French Crullers, Jellies, Boston Cream, Chocolate Glazed (for John N.) Honey Dipped, and a coffee for $13 - and to our suprise what else was inside the box but a complimentary hand full of Donut Holes! <br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.donutpub.com/" target="_blank">The Donut Pub</a> is deliciuous. Next time you need your donut fix, drive like the wind and take a seat at the Pub. If it's too far to walk, call Oscar for a ride - just don't try to take his donut! :)<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
This weekend I took a trip through upstate NY on the <a href="http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Content/Pages/home.html">Harley</a> , fortunately the weather was beautiful. I waited for the rain to abate on Saturday and took off for my adventure. It was a beautiful start, the sun came out, the wind whipped through my helmet and I could feel my muscles relaxing in to the rhythm of the bike; serenity. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

To be perfectly blunt, when I am riding, I hate the cold. I love whizzing down the road but lack of feeling in my hands, is not high on the fun scale. Fortunately for you and I, my hands went completely numb just off route 90 outside of <a href="http://www.littlefallsny.com/">Little Falls, NY</a>; home of everyones favorite little tea bag Salada. "That's Salada tea!" As the ad used to go. As much know for their tasty tea as their witty quips on the tea bag label, I have kept one for the better part of 30 years that says "Beer in a water bed makes a foam mattress", the company that created it, <span><span><a href="http://www.redcofoods.com/">Redco Foods, Inc</a>, still calls Little Falls home and is a constant reminder of American manufacturing; but I just digressed. </span></span></div>

<span><span>The White Rose Bakery is nestled in a non-descript "old-timey" sidewalk of shops that line main street in a one-way traffic flow. Look to the right quickly before coming to the intersection of N. Ann St. and there it is. Wait one second too long and you'll miss it. Once inside you'll be glad you found this 30+ year old neighborhood institution. Not only are their prices better than anywhere I have yet to visit, $.50 a donut, $.40 a cider donut; I got a coffee and 2 donuts for $1.80!, but the friendly staff, welcoming smells of breads, cookies, pastry, and of course donuts cause the line of familiar patrons to form fast, sometimes cycling through twice. OK, that was just me. </span></span></div>

If only I had had a trailer I would have ordered a dozen and then promptly eaten then all. I refrained. So the next time you find yourself whizzing down Route 90 in Upstate NY and having craving for donuts, or tea for that matter, go visit the friendly folks at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/White-Rose-Bakery/183786688329666">The White Rose Bakery.</a>...and bring back a jelly bun for me. </div>

<br />
It never ceases to amaze me how innovators will find a way to change the "normal everyday" and make it amazing, sophisticated and sublime; fortunately Donuts are finally having their day. As I have mentioned in previous posts the underground artistry of donuts has been hitting the main streets and mainstream in the last few years and shops, such as <a href="http://www.donutsavant.com/">Donut Savant, Oakland, CA</a>, are no exception. <br />

<br />
I hope you all enjoyed your <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day">Labor Day</a> weekend holiday with family, friends and of course good donuts; I did. As I sat with coffee in hand devouring a scrumptious little nut, I starting thinking about donut recipes and just how easy it would be to whip up some homemade donuts from scratch. That would mean I would have to know exactly what makes up your average donut, hence today's topic; <a href="http://dunkinprincess.wordpress.com/2012/04/10/the-glazed-yeast-donut/">The Basic Glazed</a>.<br />
<br />
Much like a <a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/best-chocolate-chip-cookies/">chocolate chip cookie</a> recipe is made up of chocolate chips and shall we say "cookie material" the basic glazed donut recipe consists of much the same, a basic glaze and "donut material". It just so happens that this "donut material" is the foundation for all yeast raised donuts and is an excellent jumping off point for the most creative of bakers. With that in mind you will find the basic building blocks of all raised donuts, as well as instructions to bake them below. <br />

Unlike many holidays, Halloween holds a mystery and excitement for children of all ages that lights a spark inside all who celebrate; or perhaps that is just the candy. In the interest of preparing to celebrate I thought I would see if we could change things up this year and add donuts. Not to worry, my good friend and loyal donut follower Bob C. has supplied just the right idea; <a href="http://www.make-it-do.com/tag/halloween-donut-tree/">The Halloween Donut Tree</a>, courtesy of Calli at <a href="http://www.make-it-do.com/tag/halloween-donut-tree/">Make It Do</a>, by way of Brittany at <a href="http://onecharmingparty.com/2011/10/05/donut-tree/">One Charming Party. </a></div>

<br />
I love a good bit of news from the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/22/best-indie-doughnut-shops_n_1823229.html?ir=Small+Business#slide=1417239">Huffington Post</a>. I love it even more when it revolves around donuts. And today they have not failed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk3onrCh2bwXAOobYpFibighpzTt_tjKZWF0aOzpDzaLGAiX057STEj3Ki7HTaz3cXzfzTPE7s-VqUvP0JN0Z9_rCGWzu1Miqfp-Gutyoj8lHNkTGrwDpMXk_Lb8RPxxCnruabcsVdGYc/s1600/Sublime+Straberry+and+Creme.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk3onrCh2bwXAOobYpFibighpzTt_tjKZWF0aOzpDzaLGAiX057STEj3Ki7HTaz3cXzfzTPE7s-VqUvP0JN0Z9_rCGWzu1Miqfp-Gutyoj8lHNkTGrwDpMXk_Lb8RPxxCnruabcsVdGYc/s320/Sublime+Straberry+and+Creme.jpg" width="320" yda="true" /></a></div>
I have I mentioned that there has been an ever increasing trend recently toward more edgy, creative and innovative donut flavors; and the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/22/best-indie-doughnut-shops_n_1823229.html?ir=Small+Business#slide=1417239">Huffington Post</a> has blown the lid clean off! Whether we are looking at <a href="http://www.sublimedoughnuts.com/">Atlanta based Sublime Donuts</a> strawberry and creme, which goes full-blown-donut on strawberry shortcake, or <a href="http://www.toppotdoughnuts.com/">Seattles' Top Pot Donuts</a> going fasionista with the <a href="http://www.toppotdoughnuts.com/doughnuts.html">Chocolate Feather </a>Boa, or back to local hot spot <a href="http://www.kanesdonuts.com/">Kane's Donuts, of Saugus</a>, unseating the likes of donut juggernaut <a href="http://www.dunkindonuts.com/dunkindonuts/en.html">Dunkin Donuts</a>, we have independent shops crisscrossing the country with innovation and temptation to satisfy the pickiest of donut eaters. <br />
<br />
Read up, eat up and enjoy!<br />

<br />
Traveling always makes me think about new donuts. New donuts always make me think about recipes. And, since there has been an influx of new donuts flavors at both local shops and chain stores as of late, I thought it best to dedicate today's Nut to just that; recipes. <br />
<br />
Let's start with my favorite: <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Jelly-Doughnuts/Detail.aspx">Jelly Doughnuts</a>, courtesy of <span class="author" id="ctl00_CenterColumnPlaceHolder_recipe_lblSubmitter" rel="nofollow"><span id="ctl00_CenterColumnPlaceHolder_recipe_lblSubmitter_lblUser0"><a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Jelly-Doughnuts/Detail.aspx">Charlie McHugh</a></span></span> on <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Jelly-Doughnuts/Detail.aspx">All Recipes.com</a> :<br />

Whatever Chicago's <b>Doughnut Vault</b> is putting in its <a href="http://thedoughnutvault.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">gourmet doughnuts</a> appears to be having bizarre side effects: <em>somethings</em> causing people to line up for hours in rainy, 55-degree weather for the chance to buy a pastry from <i>Food & Wine</i>'s <a href="http://chicago.eater.com/archives/2012/04/24/doughnut-vault-is-no-1.php">#1 doughnut shop in the country</a>. Want to know what it is? Maybe track down someone from this surprisingly serene time-lapse video of a <strong>Saturday morning doughnut frenzy</strong> along Franklin Street. Umbrella-wielding folks lined up at 8:30 a.m.—an hour before opening—and Doughnut Vault <strong>sold out in about 2.5 hours</strong>. Recently on, <em><a href="http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/view/1187/">The Rachael Ray Show</a>,</em> actor Jerry O'Connell defended the combination of beef, cheese, bacon, and glazed doughnuts. "If my client is charged with being delicious, then yes—he's guilty, But the last time I checked law books, mixing great taste and flavors was every American's right." So...why did O'Connell report for "Jerry duty" (their words, not mine) in a mock trial presided over by Judge Rachael Ray? To promote his new legal comedy/drama show, <em><a href="http://www.cbs.com/primetime/the_defenders/">The Defenders</a>.</em> <br />

I know what you are thinking now and you are still wrong. Are donuts evil, no. Do donuts cause wars, well perhaps a stampede, but no. Will donuts cause boughts of random silliness, causing people to do ridiculous things that no cupcake or cookie has ever inspired - YES! So, the next time you worry about the side effects of donuts remember, donuts make smiles, smiles cause laughter, and laughter is always a good thing. Eat up and enjoy!<br />

<br />
Back from the weekend, behind a my desk, and wondering about all manner of Donut randomness...the old question occurs to me "How many days does it take to digest a donut?" I wonder not so much in the interest of weight loss, but more in the interest of bonding with my dough ball. How long will it be with me before passing to the other side? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaOKHnSfCUC-cwTXhkUbUj6Xy7bTXwSAFATZVv4JcTPc24TwPk9HrIccjgw7VyobUDSQMgYbbP-awEwilQMhBt0YZzHNcCZJbl5bAkCmZsesPJhNRn38OVXyIHFScRhclTSzwZ3ORmD4I/s1600/donut-treadmill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaOKHnSfCUC-cwTXhkUbUj6Xy7bTXwSAFATZVv4JcTPc24TwPk9HrIccjgw7VyobUDSQMgYbbP-awEwilQMhBt0YZzHNcCZJbl5bAkCmZsesPJhNRn38OVXyIHFScRhclTSzwZ3ORmD4I/s320/donut-treadmill.jpg" width="244" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span class="b"><strong><a href="http://answers.ask.com/Food_and_Drinks/Other/how_long_does_it_take_to_digest_a_donut">heathertharp</a>, </strong>on<strong> </strong><a href="http://ask.com/"><strong>Ask.com</strong></a> seems to think the answer is 72 hours, while the crowd at <a href="http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080127161110AA34v90"><strong>Yahoo answers</strong></a> seems t</span>o range from 72 hours to 72 years, if only. No matter how much research I do, the misconceptions surrounding digestion of our beloved donuts range from hours to days, to weeks. There is an almost mythical lore to the amount of time a donut stays in your system. It's a legend best saved for a camp fire or passed down from grandparents to unsuspecting grandkids being bounced upon their knees. The donut, the mighty, the dough filled ball; dare you consume, may never leave. Unless of course, you have a metabolism.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
But then we must come back to reality and face the simple fact that, no matter how magical, mythical, or feared, the donut too is only food. And like any food, is comprised of sugars, and will digest. This donut too shall pass. But that means it's time for another. :)<br />

To wake up your week and toast those adventurous individuals I would like to present you with the following work from <a href="http://samcrayne.com/">Sam Crayne</a>, a Director, Cinematographer, Photographer, and Graphic Designer based in San Francisco, CA; celebrating the search for donuts and finding them at <a href="http://www.cityowls.com/americas/north-america/usa/california/san-francisco/eat/bobs-donut-pastry-shop-280554.html">Bob's Donuts and Pastry Shop</a>...<br />
<br />
Sam manages to capture the adventure of the late night donut hunt, the hungry patrons gathering like hawks, Bob baking and frying, the activity and hum of the donut culture, nicely edited with support from <a href="http://www.keshasparty.com/us/home">Kesha's hit Tik Tok</a>; how could you not want to get one right now?<br />

<br />
I love donuts and I love my friends. I also love that I have helped many of my friends love donuts. But of course, as we are talking about donuts, that is not a hard challenge. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVRTBpyMjAENrvXTmRFXrVpC9ZGWwGFPYRehCXqqQgBz6XiTNioXttqMccFkwvBbNJxm40vdNAzlNH1I-t8CXzpK5LgPwEzC5TTV8sLzExoRtf1VQMu-myF569u1zS4TuyeEOoVAGhBwk/s1600/Tony+Donut.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="151" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVRTBpyMjAENrvXTmRFXrVpC9ZGWwGFPYRehCXqqQgBz6XiTNioXttqMccFkwvBbNJxm40vdNAzlNH1I-t8CXzpK5LgPwEzC5TTV8sLzExoRtf1VQMu-myF569u1zS4TuyeEOoVAGhBwk/s200/Tony+Donut.gif" width="200" /></a></div>
Some time back I announced the launch of a new segment focusing on the adventures of one of our loyal followers and close compatriot, Tony Mento, brilliantly titled "<a href="http://thedonutdirectory.com/2011/03/donut-directory-is-growing.html">Where's Tony with a Donut</a>". Since we haven't heard much from him lately one could only assume that Tony was in fact "missing with a donut"... or likely several. <br />
<br />
Therefore, when I received a text message this past week from Tony saying only this..."One word: <a href="http://congdons.com/">Congdon's</a>!" You can imagine how ecstatic I was. For, not only was Tony still alive, but he was also back on the hunt...without a vengeance it seemed. I replied - "Are you there?" as I was in <a href="http://www.sanfordmaine.org/">Sanford Maine</a> at the time and thought I might be able to catch up with him for a quick jelly. But nothing. What had happened? My mind began racing thinking of all the donuts, the carnage of jelly, cream, chocolate and frosting. Tony was the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Italian_Stallion">Italian Stallion</a> unleashed and hungry for any donut in his path. Like a Neanderthal on a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Corona">Smith Corona</a>, short choppy phrases where all he could manage... "Was now in Portland. BAVARIAN CREME!" Oh no, I thought. "Did Portland have any idea what was descending upon them?" Or was he lling out for help while inside a Bavarian creme? Then, there was silence. I imagine a sugary sweet coma of indulgence had caused him to lose his capacity to speak...but then came the pictures, FAST!<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I have a great day job, even though it has nothing to do with Donuts. Each and every day our CEO sends out an inspirational nugget called the "Thought of The Day", which I and several of my colleagues always look forward to. Toady's little nugget of wisdom was the following from none other than <a href="http://www.qotd.org/quotes/Charles.M.Schwab">Charles Schwab</a>:</span><br />

His quote, and fascinating rise from rags to riches, though not involved with donuts, makes me think of the many mom and pop shops we highlight on the <a href="http://www.thedonutdirectory.com/">The Donut Directory</a>. The medium is different but the story, drive and dedication is the same. It's about individuals pushing their capacity, going beyond their limits and following a dream to makes their lives and our country better. </div>

“It was very cool to watch – money that I had saved from making dilly bars at a Dairy Queen when I was in High School – go to local tradesmen who were going to spend their money locally with people who would turn around and do the same,” she says. “When you hear on the news about the economy, it’s too large to not feel powerless. Focusing on my community and the people interact with everyday has a more powerful and rewarding effect.”</div>

We ended up with over a dozen plain raised donuts, glazed, cinnamon sugar and chocolate glazed. I'm not ashamed to say that I polished of at least 7 and I'm looking forward to the next batch. I'll be sure to post the recipe as soon as Julie will give it up. But if you have a favorite recipe let us know and we'll bake a batch and immortalize you in <a href="http://www.thedonutdirectory.com/">The Donut Directory</a>! <br />

<b>Superior Donuts</b> is a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_(theatre)" title="Play (theatre)">play</a> by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States" title="United States">American</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playwright" title="Playwright">playwright</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Letts" title="Tracy Letts">Tracy Letts</a>. The play focuses on the relationship between despondent Arthur Przybyszewski, a former 1960s radical who owns a rundown donut shop in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uptown,_Chicago" title="Uptown, Chicago">Uptown, Chicago</a>, and Franco, his energetic but troubled young <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American" title="African American">African American</a> assistant who wants to update the establishment with lively music and healthy menu options. Dialogue scenes are separated by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soliloquy" title="Soliloquy">soliloquys</a> in which Arthur discusses his past and reminisces about the city as it was in his younger years.<br />

<br />
The captivating aspect of Superior donuts, which was partly due to the timing of our recent economic struggles and the <a href="http://lyricstage.com/">The Lyric Stage Company</a>'s choice to present the piece in early spring, was the accuracy in which the dialogue and the characters depict all that the American dream was and all that we dreamed it could be. Once a great nation, we have tripped and fallen, but we can rise again; like a donut. Superior Donuts send just that message and does so through the hole in the donut. The audience feels like they have a seat at the counter, can feel the grittiness, the joy, and the pain that unfolds<br />

As James Foritano's review from <a href="http://blogspot.artscopemagazine.com/?p=637">Arts Scope</a> says: "What kept the plot of Lyric Stage’s presentation of “Superior Donuts” dancing for me was the sharply but subtly delineated asymmetry of the characters, all wrestling with the “American Dream” but at different and differently slippery stages of the contest. “Superior Donuts” was, for me, the national ‘conversation’ our pundits and politicians keep promising but never broaching, although I didn’t realize that dimension, fully, until long out onto the cold streets of Boston. I left the Lyric Stage full of the atmosphere and strivings of uptown Chicago, of typical Chicagoans whose orbits intersect profoundly, wittily and sometimes unsettlingly with our own neighborhoods and selves." If you have the opportunity to catch a local performance this Donut hunter strongly suggests you do so.Donut Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05240269251340276040noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263267035398051270.post-29474378044613182502012-06-08T13:50:00.000-07:002012-06-08T13:50:18.543-07:00Celebrate National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day!<strong>The Friday Nut</strong><br />

<br />
I can't believe it has already been a year since the last National Donut Day, but here wer are again. So go out and celebrate with, well, donuts of course. <br />
<br />
National Donut Day, celebrated the first Friday of June every year, celebrates the Donut Day event created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut, or donut and is delicious - Thanks <a href="http://donutdayusa.com/">Donut Day USA</a>!<br />
<br />
With that in mind let's take a sampling of what's going on in local donuts around the country to celebrate our best dough friend!<br />
<br />

And, since work has brought me in and out of the Big Apple on a weekly basis as of late, those corners have been covered with food carts. To say I love food carts is to do neither the carts nor the word "love" justice. For me, food carts are much like and adult version of an ice cream truck, only I don't have to chase them nor do I have to ask anyone else for money. <br />
<br />
Recently, I have noticed more and more of my favorite little street stops bulging with donuts and pastries of all shapes and sizes; largely because I now take the 5:00 am train in. Take my existing curiosity with food-cartage and add donuts to it and well, let's just say the whole office eagerly awaits my arrival.<br />

Though I would love to believe the average street vendor rises at 2:00am and has a complete bakery back room some where hidden down under the coffee urns and rows of multi-colored juices, even I know that these nuts are likely the by product of some large scale production line. So, I asked. The first vendor informed me that he didn't make them but loaded up in the early AM at a company called <a href="http://macdonut.com/">Mac Donut</a>. The second street vendor I asked said again, <a href="http://macdonut.com/">Mac Donut</a>, as did the 3rd and fourth and so on. Take it from me, in the world of wholesale street food, Mac Donut is definitely doing it right. With 20+ flavors of donuts, muffins and specialty pastries, stop by the next street vendor you see and ask them..."Where do you donuts come from?" <br />
As though we needed another reason to celebrate this week, other than donuts being the best blob of dough ever invented; it's Thanksgiving. And, as we humans tend to wrap every holiday possible in all manner of food, why not bring donuts? Or in this case, <a href="http://www.cheekykitchen.com/2010/11/thanksgiving-donut-pops.html">Donut Pops</a>. So, I searched high and low for a wonderful new way to celebrate this holiday of feasting donut style, and found this wonderful recipe from the folks at <a href="http://www.cheekykitchen.com/">Cheeky Kitchen</a>, taken from <a href="http://www.bakerella.com/category/pops-bites/cake-pops/">Bakerella</a>, the masters of all things cake pop!<br />
<br />
I'm looking forward to trying these myself and wish you all Happy Thanksgiving!<br />

Masters, 41, is accused of shoplifting the pastry and pushing a store worker who tried to stop him. The worker was unhurt. But with that shove, his shoplifting turned into a strong-arm robbery. Masters, who appeared in court Friday, is stunned. The prosecutor shows no signs of backing down. In fact, because Masters has a prior record, he could get a sentence of 30 years to life. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><strong>Lanell Gibbs</strong> was there the day of the doughnut heist. </div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"That was a first," Gibbs, 68, said.</em></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">She has worked for 11 years as a cashier at Country Mart, a regional supermarket chain. Next to her register, she keeps a clipping from the local newspaper about the doughnut man's case. He was indicted just last month, although the theft took place in December. She likes to show the article to customers as she recounts the story.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">It was about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The store was in a lull. Gibbs, who could see the doughnut case from her station, said she saw Masters slip the doughnut into the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">She turned to a co-worker and said, "I saw him take a doughnut. Let's see if he pays for it."</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

The co-worker, a 54-year-old woman, demanded that Masters come inside, according to the police report. He offered to give the doughnut back. She declined and grabbed his arm. That is when Masters allegedly delivered "a backhanded punch to the chest" and took off running, police said.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"That made her mad," Gibbs recalled.</em></div><div style="text-align: left;"><em><br />
</em><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">The woman, who was uninjured, jumped in her car and called police as she chased Masters. He was arrested minutes later. Farmington Police Chief Rick Baker said the two incidents taken separately equaled two misdemeanors: shoplifting and minor third-degree assault. Together, they make for second-degree robbery, a class B felony, defined in state law as forcibly stealing property. The amount of force and the amount of property does not matter.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguD2BW7Br6c8PuikPXDWJ9Punga-JXL3sTxiQp7Ai3j0bvgfn1uXqrDgiemlxBbRYclAKRkgRM_fwsMBaKHgyb6KKKQRa5YS1_eKOsetQuJDdA1qKSNd2s3_ZgbsGgbssWkq_enJKcbwk/s1600/donut_van_chase.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguD2BW7Br6c8PuikPXDWJ9Punga-JXL3sTxiQp7Ai3j0bvgfn1uXqrDgiemlxBbRYclAKRkgRM_fwsMBaKHgyb6KKKQRa5YS1_eKOsetQuJDdA1qKSNd2s3_ZgbsGgbssWkq_enJKcbwk/s200/donut_van_chase.jpg" width="168" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"It's not the doughnut," Baker said. "It's the assault."</em></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">Masters is a small man, wiry, about 5-foot-6, with short-cropped hair, a graying goatee and hound-dog eyes. He is a "frequent flier" at the St. Francois County detention center. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"Yeah, Scotty is well known," said Deputy Sheriff Dennis Smith, reviewing Masters' criminal history.</em></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Masters, who lives in the nearby town of Park Hills, has been arrested more than a dozen times: for being drunk, for shoplifting, for missed court dates, for marijuana possession. He spent most of the 1990s and a stretch from 2000 to 2004 in state prison for the felonies of torching a car to collect insurance and possessing methamphetamine ingredients. In a jailhouse interview last week, Masters admitted he had taken the doughnut. Masters said he had been taking a break from his roofing job when he stopped into Country Mart. He was hungry. He fled the scene, but he said he did not lay a hand on the woman.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"Strong-arm robbery? Over a doughnut? That's impossible," Masters said, exasperated. "I've never had a violent crime in my life. And there's no way I would've pushed a woman over a doughnut."</em></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
After his arrest, he forgot all about the case. He assumed it had been dismissed. He spent the summer in jail on outstanding warrants. Just before he was to get out, he was indicted Sept. 14 in the doughnut case. His bail was set at $25,000 — well beyond his means. Masters briefly appeared in court Friday. His case was continued until next month. He is shaken by the possibility of a third felony conviction. A prosecutor could pursue an enhanced sentence. As a persistent offender, Masters could face a murderer's term.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"I can't believe this crap," Masters said.</em></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
A grand jury agreed with police on the strong-arm robbery charge. County Prosecutor Wendy Wexler Horn said that it was "way too early to know how it is going to play out" but that the charge seemed appropriate given the allegations. She was aware that some people seemed shocked by the case.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><em>"People are missing the point," Horn said. "It is not about the doughnut."</em></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">But to many people here, it is all about the doughnut.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Still, for all the attention paid to the doughnut incident, one detail may never emerge: the kind of doughnut Masters stole.Country Mart stocks everything from simple glazed ring doughnuts to gooey butter squares to filled cream horns and danishes. But the police report makes no mention of the doughnut style. Gibbs said she could not recall it. Other workers, too, drew a blank. Even Masters, sitting in jail with only time to think, said he could not remember. It is a detail that seems lost to history.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioeo1v50yklTHAJxdcEV-HOkPYn2CfKGMymTiglkfGjJXgPZNjiyZq0J6PezT13zc_FbShPeuTws-oqeGal0aWCgw4Y1rynncJNHh7W6kCtiWtN-TP6C8CxDiZ-I2HWpSpiWNqjdUWuGs/s1600/Murder+of++Jelly+Donut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="146" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioeo1v50yklTHAJxdcEV-HOkPYn2CfKGMymTiglkfGjJXgPZNjiyZq0J6PezT13zc_FbShPeuTws-oqeGal0aWCgw4Y1rynncJNHh7W6kCtiWtN-TP6C8CxDiZ-I2HWpSpiWNqjdUWuGs/s200/Murder+of++Jelly+Donut.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">And Masters never got a chance to enjoy that fateful doughnut. He said he threw it to the ground when he fled."</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">So, remember, if you ever commit a crime where a donut is involved, remember what kind it is, for God's sake eat it, and ....it's all about the donut!</div></div>Donut Manhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05240269251340276040noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263267035398051270.post-85804969644887170102011-11-10T13:23:00.000-08:002011-11-10T13:23:15.537-08:00Donuts From Around the World!<strong>The Friday Nut</strong><br />

<br />
Donuts have a sublime place in any society, because they are simple. It is that consistent simplicity that makes the donut so prone to humor in any culture. Combine that characteristic with the its visual aesthetic, throw in some filmmakers with a sharp eye for expression and cultural lore (cops and donuts), add the astute comedic timing of a skilled editor, and set that to the gripping beats of Hip Hop artist <a href="http://j.dilla/">J.Dilla</a>'s (may he rest in peace) hit song and you have <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC3Cthm0HFU&feature=related">The Last Donut of The Night</a>. <br />

It is well deserved. <br />

The film is rife with comedy and satire, but can also show corruption and political unrest as relative to the audience viewing it; all conveyed through people fighting over donuts. <br />
<br />
Watch the donuts bouncing and rolling off the ground as though the thief has just released them from there cage, and decide for yourself. Never being one to make a big deal out of my day, I'm very happy to be surrounded by some amazing friends who often do. Our loyal donut hunters Deb and Sara, who are both very dear to me, went to some special lengths this past Monday for the Donut Man. Sara, keeping me diverted at dinner and off track from what Deb was planning, and Deb working double time on the cake....which as you can guess involved Donuts. Not only involved donuts, but was constructed entirely of DONUTS! I had died and gone to heaven. The best part of this event was that Deb actually called our local Market Basket at 8:00am and inquired as to whether they could make a "Donut Cake" or not. The conversation went a little something like this:</div><br />
8:00am 10/17/2011<br />
Deb: "Yes, hi, I have special request for a friend. Can you make a cake out of donuts?"<br />
Baker: "Well, I don't know. We've never done that."<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Deb: "I understand that, but you do make your donuts on-sight correct?"</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Baker: "Yes."</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Deb: "Well, could you then just take a bunch of the dough and combine it into 1 big jelly donut or something that we could decorate?"</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Baker: (laughing) "Well, we could certainly try...why not?"</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Deb: "Excellent, I'll check back around lunch time."</div>Baker: "Ok, no promises though."<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">12:00pm</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Deb: "Ya hi, this is Deb the woman who called about the Donut Cake."</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Baker: "Yes, hi Deb. We really tried, but unfortunately we could get it to come together like a cake."</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Deb: "Blast!" "Thanks for trying. You do have donuts though right?"</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Baker: "Yes, several varieties."</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Deb: "Ok, I'll be there after work."</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">6:00pm</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">After which the mad dash ensued to Market Basket to 1) buy the donuts , 2) get home before me , 3) Assemble them into a cake (inject rum...yes rum) and 4) frost them into a concrete like mass of cake and alcohol which was amazing. All while Sara was distracting me with an elaborate ruse of Chinese food and Mai Tais...hmmm, it worked. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Not only am I thoroughly impressed by the team at the local Market Basket for actually trying to pull this off, but I am truly grateful to have people in my life who care enough to do something this meaningful for the Donut Man. 36 will be a Birthday to remember always. Thank you Deb and Sara. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
